Helpful Writerly Things
Many people dream of being a writer. I'm no expert, but I can share the experiences I've had and the things that I've learned. Feel free to email me and share your own experiences.

* Being a writer isn't something you choose, it's something you are. There are lots of opinions on this. Try reading this or maybe this.

* Write every day. Personally, I keep a journal and try to write at least three pages each day in longhand. If you haven't tried The Artist's Way, give it a try. If I don't do my Morning Pages, I feel like my day isn't off to a good start - like I'm going through the day with one hand tied behind my back. And I get cranky. It's true - ask my husband!

* Create a ritual. Use a beautiful pen. I recommend a fountain pen with a gold nib. Goldspot has some great deals like this one, that I purchased. Light a candle. Listen to music. Lately, I've been liking the soundtrack to Twilight.

* Treat yourself like a writer. Subscribe to a magazine such as Writer's Digest or Poets & Writers. Buy books. Study your craft. Go to writers conferences. Join a local writing group.

* Surround yourself with others who write. Writing is a lonely affair, but don't always go it alone. Again, go to writers conferences. Join a local writing group. Find a critique group. If you can't find one, start one. Participate in something like Book In a Week (BIW) or NaNoWriMo to make yourself accountable.

 * Respect your writing time. Schedule time to write, and respect that time. If you don't respect it, how can you expect others to respect it?
